Carbon Mapper uses satellite data to map methane and CO2 emissions across the globe, to identify super-emitters and provide real-time data to private and public partners. The non-profit organization was seeking a new approach to the user experience of their online portal, where scientists and the general public can view data on a variety of metrics. The previous portal lacked visual cohesion, and did not accurately represent the depth of data available.
I worked with a project manager and lead developer to create initial sketches for different layouts and application interfaces to handle the various requirements. With so much data on display, we worked through many UI possibilities, including collapsible panels, modals, split screens, sticky navigation and much more. We also needed the interface to work within the confines of tablet devices.
I provided Figma design files for review and worked closely with the lead developer to determine style guides and best practices for front-end code.
We had a limited budget and timeframe to complete the project, and it was considered a successful next-step in the evolution of the portal. I provided several screens for Carbon Mapper to use as reference as they worked in the future to continue refining the user interface.
